Time and Effort Logging for CA Practices
Staff log hours against a job so the firm can see which clients take more effort than their fee suggests. The hours sit on the job beside the preparer, reviewer and status.
Hours logged against the job
Hours are recorded on the job itself. An article assistant adds the time spent preparing a return, and a manager adds the time spent on review before the partner signs off. Entries stay with the job and the client. A partner opening a client can see the effort that went into each of its filings during the year.

Questions it helps a partner ask
The aim is a plain picture. It shows where staff time goes.
- Which clients take more hours than their fee supports?
- Which services need more review time than expected?
- Is work spread evenly across articles and managers?
- Has a fee term stayed unchanged while the work grew?
What it is not
Frequently asked questions
Does time logging change how a client is billed?
No. Bills are raised from the agreed fees and the work done. Logged time is for review and does not alter a bill unless the firm chooses to act on it.
Can a manager see the hours logged by each article?
Yes. Hours are entered on the job, which carries the preparer’s name, so a manager can read effort by person.
Must every job have time logged?
No. Which jobs need it, and how detailed the entries are, is decided with the firm during implementation.
Can it list clients who cost more effort than they pay for?
Yes. Logged hours are read against the fee agreed, so clients whose effort looks high for their fee can be listed for the partners to review.
