Requirements checklist

What to ask for when choosing software for fisheries and aquaculture farms.

A checklist built from how fisheries and aquaculture farms work, to print or save as a PDF and bring to any supplier meeting.

Share your requirements

What the software should cover

Tick each one that matters to your business.

  • Pond and cage register
  • Seed receipt and stocking
  • Daily feed and ration plan
  • Water quality log
  • Mortality, sampling and treatments
  • Harvest, grading and dispatch
  • Aerators, pumps and nets

Roles that need their own access

Who logs in, and what each person may see or change.

  • For farm owners
  • For farm managers
  • For pond attendants
  • For store and feed clerks
  • For sales and dispatch

Reports to ask for

Ask to see each one with your own sample data.

  • Feed issued and feed conversion by stocking lot
  • Survival and mortality by pond and hatchery lot
  • Water readings outside limit, by unit and morning
  • Average body weight against the planned growth curve
  • Treatments in withdrawal, with the date each pond clears
  • Harvest by size grade, buyer and dispatch weight
  • Buyer balances owed, oldest invoice first

Systems it may need to connect to

Note which ones you already run.

  • Water probe or logger file import
  • Weighing scale import
  • WhatsApp or SMS
  • Email
  • Accounting export

Questions for any vendor

Put these to every supplier you are comparing.

  • Can one farm run ponds and cages together?
  • How does it get feed conversion for a lot?
  • Can we see which hatchery supplied a lot?
  • Will it stop a harvest while a treatment is active?
  • Do we need water sensors?
  • Does it work when mobile signal is weak at the ponds?
  • Can hatcheries and nurseries use it?
  • Can open lots and buyer balances be moved over?
  • What happens to our pond history if we leave?
  • What goes into the cost of a quote?

Where the work usually breaks today

Circle the ones you recognise. They set the order of the project.

  • Seed lots lose their origin
  • Feed is logged but never compared
  • Water readings stay on paper
  • Treatments and withdrawal dates are separate
  • Harvest weights and sales do not agree
