Picking and Packing Lists for Wholesale Godowns

Pick lists are prepared by order or by delivery route, in the pack sizes the godown counts. The packer ticks off what went into the cartons and enters any short quantity.

From confirmed order to pick list

Once the order desk has reviewed an order, it can be picked. The storekeeper opens the list for the day instead of reading orders one by one. The list can be built by order or by delivery route, depending on how the godown loads its lorries and which dealers share a trip. Pack sizes follow the godown’s own counting, whether that is cartons, bundles, pieces or metres. Nothing is converted by hand.

What the packer does

Work from the order

The packer sees the lines to be picked, with quantities in the units the godown uses for each item.

Tick off what is packed

Each line is marked as it goes into a carton, so the list shows what is done and what is left.

Enter what was not on the rack

Short quantity is typed by the packer at the moment it is found. It is not guessed later from memory.

Short quantity stays open

The shortfall remains on the order as pending quantity. It then appears on the pending list, ready for the next trip that the order desk plans.

By order or by route

  • A list by order suits a godown that packs one dealer’s cartons at a time
  • A list by delivery route groups the orders going on the same lorry
  • Pack sizes and unit names are loaded from the item master
  • Orders still held on credit do not reach the pick list until released

What the pick list does not do

The pick list records what the packer reports. It does not count the rack. It cannot find stock that is missing from the shelf, and it does not decide which lorry carries which carton. How a godown is laid out, and who may adjust a short entry, are decided with the owner before launch. Picking can be switched off for a firm that dispatches directly from billing.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Who enters the short quantity?

The packer. The shortfall is entered as soon as it is found, and the order carries it as pending quantity until a later trip closes it out.

Can the list follow our delivery routes?

Yes. The list can be prepared by order or by delivery route. The routes themselves are set up with the client at go-live.

Does a packer need to be trained on pack sizes?

No separate training is needed on the units. Items are counted as the godown counts them, so the list reads in cartons, bundles, pieces or metres.

Is picking compulsory for every firm?

No. Picking and dispatch are switched on according to the godowns the client runs. A firm can start with orders and billing alone.
