Where each platform tends to fit

Amazon Web Services

It offers the widest catalogue of managed services, which suits complex workloads and teams that expect to need a specific service later. Choice is broad.

Microsoft Azure

This is often the natural home where a business already holds Microsoft licensing or runs Windows Server and SQL Server today. Licences carry over.

Google Cloud

Data and analytics work often lands here, as does any team that already uses Google’s data tooling for reporting and pipelines. Existing skills carry over.

DigitalOcean

A single application with a steady load often fits here, where the larger catalogues of the bigger providers are not needed. Setup is simpler.

What decides the platform

  • A data residency requirement from your sector or a customer contract
  • A specific managed service your application depends on
  • The platform your existing team already operates

Running on more than one provider

Some businesses end up on two providers, by design or by accumulation. A legacy system sits on one and a newer product on another. A mixed environment can be operated as it stands. That is workable. Where consolidating onto a single platform would simplify enough to justify the move, we say so.

It depends on your workload, expected usage and any licensing you hold. The recommendation is written down with its reasoning after those are reviewed.

Can you move us from one provider to another later?

Yes. It is a migration like any other, rehearsed on a copy and cut over in an agreed window. Effort depends on how many provider-specific services are in use.

Does picking a provider lock us in?

Partly. Provider-specific managed services create some lock-in. Where it sits is stated at design time. The trade-off is chosen in advance.

Can you work with credits we already have?

Yes. Existing credits or a start-up allocation are a valid input to the choice. The design is built around them.
