Can our old data be brought across?

Usually all of it, including data from FoxPro, Access or an old SQL database. Records are extracted and reconciled against your closing balances before the migration is signed off.

What if there is no source code for the old system?

That is common and it does not block the work. The database and printed reports show most of the rules, and your staff fill in the rest in the first workshop.

Is modernisation the same as re-engineering?

No. Modernisation replaces the old platform entirely, while re-engineering restructures a system already running on current technology. Which one applies depends on what the software runs on today.
