Margin in a box or carton plant tends to leak in five places. They are stale kraft quotes, reels cut from the wrong deckle, unrecorded wastage, repeat orders rebuilt from scratch and slow payers. Each shows up once costing, reel stock and job cards share one job record, as GullySystem sets them up.
Quotes that outlive the kraft rate
Kraft paper rates move, sometimes more than once a month. A repeat order is often supplied at a price quoted long ago. The box is the same. Its cost is not.
To see this leak, keep the costing inputs on every live specification. When the paper rate changes, recost every live box. Then decide which customers to approach and which change to absorb.
- Inner size and ply
- Liner and fluting GSM, and BF
- Sheet size and paper weight
- Conversion cost per box
- Date of the paper rate used
Reels issued without deckle and GSM
A reel register kept by weight does not show which deckle, GSM and BF are free for tomorrow’s job. So a reel gets cut for one order when another needed it whole.
Record reels by mill, GSM, BF, deckle and weight, and issue each one against a job. The register then answers the morning question. Which reel runs first?
Wastage that is never written down
Trim, makeready sheets and rejected board pile up through a shift. When none of it is recorded against a job, the loss shows only as a thin month.
Ask each machine to note sheets in, sheets out and sheets wasted on the job card. Do it at corrugation, printing, punching or slotting, and finishing. Jobs and machines with high wastage soon stand out.
Compare that figure with the allowance in your costing. If they differ, one is wrong.
- Sheets in at each stage
- Sheets passed to the next stage
- Makeready sheets
- Rejected board with a reason
Repeat orders that restart from zero
A customer reorders last year’s carton. Someone hunts for the specification, the artwork and the die number. That hour is paid for and billed to nobody.
Keep each approved box or carton with its specification, artwork, die number and last price. A repeat order then starts from the record. It also prompts a check on whether that price still covers today’s paper.
Buyers who pay later than the mill expects
Paper mills want payment sooner than many box buyers pay. The gap is working capital locked in board already shipped.
Track receivables customer by customer, with the invoice, e-way bill and challan held together. When a large buyer slows, the dispatch desk should know before the next lorry is loaded. Extending credit stays the owner’s call.
Margin leak tracker
One row for every live box specification, showing last quoted price, paper rate used, today’s paper rate, wastage allowed and wastage recorded. Fill it for your ten largest repeat items. Rows where cost has moved most need a pricing conversation first.
Open a blank worksheet to printQuestions owners ask
Does packaging software work out bursting strength or ECT?
No. It holds the ply, GSM and BF you have decided and costs the box from them. Board strength stays between you, your paper supplier and your testing lab.
Can every live quote be recosted when kraft rates change?
Yes, where each specification is held with its costing inputs. The new cost appears for each live box, and you choose which customers to go back to.
Will it show the actual cost of a finished job?
Not on its own. Costing is worked out at the quote stage. Paper issued and wastage per job are recorded, so your accountant can compare them with the quote.
Should a packaging unit buy a ready packaging ERP?
Sometimes. Ready packaging ERPs exist, and a larger plant often fits one. Custom work from GullySystem suits units whose costing, machines or specifications do not fit those screens.
