The Valentine’s Offer That Was Still Running in March

The discount went up on the board on the ninth of February. On the fourth of March somebody notices the counter is still giving it, and has been for a fortnight.

An offer with a start and an end

What it applies to

One arrangement, a category, or everything. A blanket discount in wedding season is an expensive way to be generous.

The dates

It begins on its date and it stops on its date, without anybody remembering to take it off the till.

Who gets it

Everyone, or the customers you choose: last year’s Valentine’s buyers, the people with an occasion this month, the corporate list.

How it shows at billing

Applied on the bill as a named offer, so the counter is not doing arithmetic and the customer can see what she saved.

The message that goes with it

An offer nobody hears about is a discount for people who were going to buy anyway. Sent to the customers whose anniversary falls this month, the same offer is a reminder they were glad to get. The customer list decides whether a promotion works, far more than the size of the discount does.

After the week is over

  • Orders that carried the offer, against orders that did not
  • What the discount cost, in rupees, for the week
  • Which customers came back afterwards at the full price
  • Whether the fourteenth needed an offer at all

A discount is the easiest thing in the shop to give away

Two hundred bouquets sold at fifteen per cent off can be a worse fortnight than a hundred and sixty at full price, once the wastage is counted. The screen will run whatever offer you set up. Deciding whether it is worth running is yours, and the sales and wastage figures afterwards are the only honest answer.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Can an offer be limited to one shop?

Yes. Shops in different neighbourhoods rarely need the same offer, and a discount that makes sense near a college does not make sense near an office park.

Will it stop on its own?

Yes, on the end date you set. That alone is the reason most shops want this, because the offer that runs for three extra weeks is a familiar and costly story.

Can we send it only to past customers?

Yes. Pick the customers by what they have ordered or by the occasions on their record, and the message goes to that list rather than to everyone in the phone book.
