What does IoT and edge computing actually mean for a business like ours?
It means putting small sensors on the equipment that matters, sending those readings to a dashboard your team can see from anywhere, and alerting a person when something goes out of range. Edge computing is the part that runs at your site: a gateway that keeps recording and keeps acting even when the internet is down.
Do you supply the hardware, or do we buy the devices ourselves?
Either way works, and we recommend the devices be bought in your name. We specify the sensors, gateway and connectivity in the assessment, and you can procure them directly from the supplier or ask us to procure and invoice them along with the work. What we avoid is locked hardware that only we can replace or reconfigure, because a sensor that fails on a Sunday should be replaceable from a local supplier.
Which machines, sensors and protocols can you connect to?
Most industrial and facility equipment can be read, either from its controller or by adding a sensor. We work with Modbus RTU and TCP, OPC UA, BACnet, RS-485, 4-20 mA, pulse and dry-contact signals, and with temperature, humidity, level, flow, pressure, vibration, current and door sensors, energy meters and GPS trackers. During the site assessment we confirm exactly which route each machine supports before anything is committed.
Can you monitor old equipment, or machines still under warranty or an AMC?
Usually yes. Older machines without any digital interface are handled with external sensors, clamp-on current sensors, contact-based inputs or a separate energy meter, none of which changes how the machine runs. Where a machine is under warranty or an annual maintenance contract, we ask you to obtain the supplier’s consent before anything is fitted, and we keep the installation non-invasive so the contract is not affected.
Will the system keep working when the internet drops or power fails?
Yes, that is the point of the edge layer. The gateway stores readings locally through a connectivity outage, continues to evaluate alarm rules, drives local outputs such as a hooter, lamp, pump or valve, and uploads the buffered history in order when the link returns, so the record has no gap. For power interruptions we plan battery backup for the gateway and critical sensors, and the system logs the power event itself as an alert.
Will this predict breakdowns before they happen?
It will tell you when a machine is behaving abnormally, which is what most businesses actually need. Rising temperature, increased vibration, longer cycle times or higher current draw are visible as they develop, and thresholds on those give early warning without needing a long history first. Genuine failure prediction needs a history of that specific machine running normally and a record of the failures it has had, so we treat it as something to build towards once you have collected data, never as something promised at the start.
How is our device and site data kept secure?
Devices talk to the cloud over encrypted connections with per-device credentials, so one compromised sensor cannot impersonate the rest. The gateway makes outbound connections rather than requiring open inbound ports on your network, credentials are stored outside the code and can be rotated, access to dashboards and settings is role-based and logged, and control outputs are separated from monitoring so a dashboard user cannot start equipment. We sign a non-disclosure agreement before assessment begins.
Can we start with a pilot on one machine or one site?
Yes, and for most businesses it is the sensible way in. A pilot instruments one chamber, machine, pump house or vehicle, runs alongside your existing manual log so the readings can be compared, and proves both the data and your team’s response before more money is spent. To run one we need site access, a person who knows the equipment, a power point near the installation, and agreement on the thresholds and who receives the alerts.
What drives the cost of an IoT and edge project?
Cost splits into hardware and work, and both follow the site rather than a per-device rate. The drivers are how many measurement points you need and how many locations they sit across, whether existing controllers can be read or new sensors must be added, cabling and panel work at the site, connectivity per location and its recurring charges, whether the system only monitors or also controls equipment, how long readings must be retained, and the level of support and calibration you want afterwards. We give an itemised proposal after the site assessment, with the bill of material separated from the software so you can decide each part.
What decides how long the work takes?
Field conditions usually decide the schedule more than the software does. The factors are hardware lead time for the sensors and gateway selected, how quickly a shutdown or maintenance window can be given for installation, how much cabling and panel work each point needs, how many sites are in scope, whether an equipment supplier must be involved for controller access, and how long you want to run in parallel with the manual log before trusting the system. The assessment gives you a schedule tied to those inputs.
Can the readings reach our existing systems, and do we own the data and the source code?
Yes to both. Telemetry, alarms and runtime can be pushed into your ERP, maintenance software, accounting system or reporting stack, and raw data can be exported on demand or on a schedule. You receive the complete source code for the gateway logic and the application, the device inventory and wiring documents, and the cloud and connectivity accounts are created in your business name with our access scoped and revocable. Nothing is licensed back to you and the data is never held hostage.
Who looks after the devices after installation, and what support and training do you provide?
Devices need an owner on your side and a support arrangement on ours. We train supervisors on what each alert means and what to do about it, and owners on reading trends and changing thresholds, with a short written runbook in plain language.
