Software Solutions for Greeting Card Sellers

Greeting cards are low in value and high in volume, and most are bought for an occasion with a date. Some are personalised with a printed message and sent straight to the recipient. Sellers need scheduling, light packing and postage rules that suit a flat envelope. This page covers how card sellers operate online.

At a glance

Print the message inside the card and post it to the recipient on the right day.

A card costs less than the postage it travels on, so every handling step has to be cheap. Mistakes cost more than the product.

Businesses and operating models

Card publishers and designers

A designer sells cards printed in batches, through its site and to shops.

Online card services

A seller prints a card with the buyer’s message and posts it direct to the recipient.

How an order moves

The workflow for greeting cards.

  1. 1

    Pick card by occasion

The buyer chooses an occasion and a style, and the site shows the cards that fit.

  2. 2

    Write the message

A message is typed or chosen from a template and printed inside, with a length limit.

  3. 3

    Choose a send date

The buyer picks a date, and the card is printed and posted to arrive by then.

  4. 4

    Print and enclose

Cards are printed on demand or taken from stock, put in envelopes and addressed to the recipient.

  5. 5

    Post and track

Cards go by letter mail or courier. Tracking is available only where the service offers it.

Where it breaks

The challenges, and what they cost.

Late arrival

A birthday card that comes two days after the birthday has no value.

Messages overrun the space

A long message is cut or printed too small.

Many orders, little margin

A single card order pays little, and handling by hand removes the margin.

Requirements to assess

What is specific to this trade.

These are requirements we would confirm in discovery. They describe what the solution may need to handle. They are not features that already exist.

  • Send dates that account for printing and postage time
  • Message length limits with a preview
  • Batch printing queues by card size
Recommended modules

What we would build for greeting cards.

Chosen from the commerce capabilities this business needs, not a list of everything.

Send date scheduling

Offer dates and hold orders until their print day.

Message templates

Provide message options with a limit on length and a preview.

Print queue

Group cards by size and paper for each print run.

Reminder emails

Remind a buyer of last year’s occasion, where the buyer allows it.

Users and permissions

Who works in the system, and what each can do.

Buyer

Chooses a card, writes a message and sets a send date.

Print operator

Prints, cuts and encloses each batch.

Posting clerk

Addresses envelopes and hands the batch to the post.

Integrations

What it would connect to.

An integration is confirmed only after its API, access and scope are checked. A connection that updates on a schedule is described as scheduled, not real-time.

  • Pay-on-delivery handling through the courier’s remittance service, agreed in writing before anything is built
  • A postal or courier service for flat envelopes, with its tracking and cut-off rules read
  • A print service, if cards are printed outside the business

India and international

Selling at home and abroad.

Postal services differ in price, speed and tracking between countries, and cards are treated as letters in some places and as parcels in others. Rates and times are set for each destination.

The wider requirements for gifts & personalised products are on the Gifts & Personalised Products page.

Configured implementation

The gift store is assembled on commerce software chosen jointly during discovery. Corporate bulk orders may use GullySystem’s wholesale ordering product where it fits. No ready gift-store product exists.

Occasion catalogues, delivery dates and message cards are covered by the category solution, and card printing is a light production step within it.

Common questions

Questions about greeting cards e-commerce.

Can the site post a card straight to the recipient?

Yes, where you offer it. The recipient’s address is entered at checkout, and the card is posted on the chosen day.

Can I remind buyers of last year’s occasions?

Where the buyer agrees, a reminder can be sent. The system does not contact people who have not agreed.

Is arrival by the occasion assured?

No. It sets the latest order and send date from the service you use. Postal delay stays outside its control.
