Photographs That Sit on a Date, Not in a Group
There are eleven hundred images in the WhatsApp group. The one showing the Block B shuttering before the pour is in there somewhere, and nobody will find it in March.
Taken at the gate, uploaded there
The supervisor takes two photographs of the slab shuttering and puts them up from the same phone, against the site and the stage. A line of text goes with them. That is the whole job, and it takes less time than forwarding them to three people.
What the daily progress report holds
Work done that day
What was poured, laid, plastered or tied, against the stage it belongs to. Written on the day, in plain words, by the man who watched it.
Labour present
The head count from attendance, so the photograph and the number of men on site agree with each other.
Material received
What arrived at the site that day, and what was issued from the store against an indent.
Photographs, dated
The images attach to that day. Three months later you open a date, not a group with eleven hundred pictures in it.
Who this is really for
Nobody writes a daily report for its own sake.
- The client who asks what happened in the fortnight he did not visit
- The billing engineer checking a quantity that is now behind plaster
- The project manager reading four sites without driving to any of them
- A concealed line somebody wants to see as it was before covering
- The owner, on a Sunday, with a phone
Frequently asked questions
Can photographs still go on WhatsApp?
Yes, and most sites will carry on doing both. The difference is that one copy sits on a date against a stage where it can be found, rather than only in a thread.
How many photographs should a day carry?
As many as the supervisor uploads, though the useful number is small. Two of the right thing beat twenty of the same wall. Agree what a day should carry at the start, because a rule added later is a rule nobody follows.
Does it work when the site has no network?
Not while the signal is gone. He uploads when he reaches one, entering it against the day it belongs to. Attendance behaves the same way, which is worth knowing before you promise a client live updates.
