How a site opens
Client, address, contract value and start date go in first. Then the stages, named the way your own bills name them, each with a planned start and end. Under the site sit the budget heads for material, labour, contract work, machinery and overheads.

The date you said and the date it happened, both left visible. That is uncomfortable and useful in roughly equal measure.

How much of the contract value this stage has carried, and what is still left in it.
The work under it
Measurements, indents, attendance and photographs all point at a stage. The stage is how a site gets read.
Slippage with reasons
A stopped day is recorded with its reason on the day it happened. A late stage becomes a list of dates rather than a story told at a review.

Frequently asked questions
Can our own stage names be used?
Yes, and they should be. Stage names, the rate list and the bill format are set before the first site is loaded, and they follow what your clients already accept.
What about a site that is already halfway?
It comes across as it stands, with the bills raised so far, the advances paid and the retention already held. You carry on from the next measurement instead of starting again.
Is this a scheduling tool?
No. It records stage dates, actual dates and the reason for every stopped day. There is no network diagram here, and a firm that plans in Primavera should go on planning there.
