The Compressor Tripped at Two, and Somebody Was Told
Not the whole factory group. The man on that shift, on the channel he actually reads, with the next name waiting behind him if he does not answer.
The customer knew before you did
A consignment is refused at the dock, or a client rings to say the chiller you maintain has been dead since morning. You are explaining a failure you had no way of seeing, and the credit note is already written. An alert does not stop the failure. It shortens the gap between the failure and a person.
How an alert travels
The channel he reads
WhatsApp, SMS, email, or the hooter and lamp at the panel. A night supervisor with no data on his phone still hears the panel.
Routed by shift
The alert goes to the named person on duty at that hour, not to a group of eleven people where everyone assumes somebody else is handling it.
Acknowledged, or escalated
If nobody acknowledges within the time you set, it climbs to the next name. Acknowledging from a phone is enough to stop the climb.
Who answered, and when
The acknowledgement is kept with the alert. At handover the shift review shows what was raised and who took it, rather than three recollections.
What the morning review shows
- Every excursion outside range, with its duration
- Who acknowledged each one, and after how long
- Alerts that escalated, and how far they climbed
- The readings around any alert, opened from the alert itself
Frequently asked questions
Does an alert fix anything?
No. It fixes nothing at all, and a dashboard that suggests otherwise is selling comfort. What changes is the hour you find out, which is usually the difference between a warm chamber and a rejected load.
How do we stop it becoming noise?
By setting durations rather than bare limits, and by tuning during the parallel run so only real events fire. If your supervisors start ignoring a particular alert, that alert is wrong and it gets changed.
Can maintenance get different alerts from the plant head?
Yes. Routing is per role and per machine. The operator at the panel, the maintenance in-charge and the owner each hear about the things they can act on.
