A plant line is not a home connection. It drops, and the hour it drops is reliably the hour something goes wrong. So the recording has to happen at the site.
A hole where the trouble was
On most dashboards a dropped link means a frozen screen and missing readings. Later, when a customer asks what the chamber was doing at half past two, there is nothing to show. The gap is always in the wrong place. It is never the quiet Sunday.
What happens at the site meanwhile
The rules keep running
Thresholds and duration rules sit on the gateway, not in the cloud. The hooter sounds at the panel and an interlock still fires with the internet gone.
Readings are held locally
Every reading taken during the outage is stored on the gateway with the time it was actually taken, not the time it eventually reached the server.
Uploaded in order
When the link returns the stored readings go up in sequence and fill back into the history, so the chart has no hole where the trouble was.
The screen says it is offline
A tile showing the gateway offline for twelve minutes, still recording at the site, is more useful than a stale value pretending to be live.
Connectivity for the site you actually have
Wi-Fi, wired, a 4G SIM or LoRaWAN, chosen per location rather than by policy.

Frequently asked questions
How long can it hold readings at the site?
It depends on the gateway you buy and how often each point is read, and that is settled when the hardware is chosen with your vendor. If the gateway itself loses power, nothing is recorded until it comes back. No uptime figure is promised here.
Will the times be wrong after a long outage?
No. Each reading carries the moment it was taken at the site, and it is written into the history at that moment rather than at the upload time. A twelve hour gap fills in as twelve hours of readings.
Do alerts still reach us while the link is down?
The panel hooter and lamp do, because they are local. WhatsApp and SMS need a network, so they arrive when the link returns, carrying their original times. That is the limit of a dropped line.
