The oven man starts at three and finishes at eleven. The Sunday helper came four Sundays. The delivery boy did nineteen trips. Month end is a sheet of paper and an argument.
The hours come off the roster
What was rostered and what was actually worked is already recorded. The payroll run reads it. Nobody retypes a month of attendance into a spreadsheet on the last evening, which is where most of the mistakes are born.
The parts that are always wrong
The early shift allowance
Set once for the three o’clock start. It applies to whoever worked it, rather than being worked out afresh on the last evening of every month.
Overtime
Hours past the shift, at your rate, from the same attendance the roster recorded.
Daily and part-time staff
Paid for days present. Four Sundays is four Sundays, and it is written down instead of recalled.
Advances
Money taken mid-month against the salary, deducted in the run. This is the number people argue about most, so it is the one worth having on record.
Payslips, and a register that survives
Statutory deductions are applied and a payslip comes out for each person. The month’s register stays. A question in March about January’s pay then has an answer. Nobody enjoys that conversation, and it goes better with a register open on the table than with two people remembering different numbers.
It does not file your returns
The figures are worked out and kept. Filing them, and whether a particular deduction applies to a bakery of your size at all, is your accountant’s call. We will not pretend the software settles that.
Frequently asked questions
Do we pay some people daily?
Yes, and that is normal in a bakery. Each person carries his own basis, monthly, daily or by the trip, and the whole lot runs together in one go.
What about salaries paid in cash?
Paid in cash or into a bank, the record is the same. The mode is noted, so the register agrees with what actually left the drawer.
Can it handle a mid-month advance?
Yes. Note the advance when it is given and the run deducts it. Two thousand taken on the twelfth is the thing nobody remembers on the thirtieth.
Does it send payslips?
They can go out as a message or be printed. Most bakeries print them, because the people who want one want it on paper.
