Bank Reconciliation Across Accounts and Branches
Current accounts, an overdraft account and branch accounts are reconciled separately. Each has its own statement import, its own rules and its own closing statement.
One account at a time
A statement belongs to one account. The current account, the overdraft and each branch account are imported separately, and the lines of one never land on the list of another. The ledger name the books use is mapped to every account, so postings land where the accountant expects them. Opening differences are reviewed before go-live.
What each account has
Who this suits
- Businesses running collections and payments through more than one bank account
- Accounts teams with an overdraft account beside the current account
- Firms with branch accounts that each need a closing statement
- CA firms reconciling several client accounts every month
What is agreed during implementation
How many accounts are set up, which banks hold them and how branches are grouped is settled with the client at set-up. Each bank’s file is read as it comes. Where a branch’s receipts come from an operations system, that link is scoped with the client. Set-up for a CA firm with several clients is discussed in the same way.
Frequently asked questions
Can the overdraft account be reconciled on its own?
Yes. It has its own statement import, its own rules and its own closing statement, separate from the current account.
Does signing off one account lock the others?
No. Accounts close on their own, so one account can be signed off while another is still being matched.
Do accounts at different banks need different files?
Each bank exports a slightly different file. Yours are read as they come, and the formats are mapped once at set-up.
Is a statement made for each account?
Yes. The reconciliation statement is exported per account and period, because each account has its own bank balance.
