Dates That Do Not Wait for Anyone
A hearing date can be adjourned. A period cannot. The dates that end quietly are the ones nobody has written anywhere except in a senior’s head.
What gets kept as a dated reminder
Each one sits on the matter, with a date, a short note and a name against it.
- The limitation date you have worked out for a claim not yet filed
- The period for an appeal or a revision after an order
- The date by which a reply, objection or written statement is to go in
- An undertaking given to a court, with what was undertaken
- A renewal, a bank guarantee expiry or a notice period on a contract matter
How it reaches somebody in time
Before, not on the day
The reminder appears at the lead time you set for that kind of date. A fortnight is common for a reply. Longer where a client has to be found and instructions taken.
On somebody’s name
A reminder with no owner is a reminder nobody reads. Each one carries the advocate or clerk responsible, and it shows on his pending list until it is closed.
Closed with a note
Filed, extended, client instructed not to proceed. The reminder is closed with a line saying which, and that line stays on the matter.
Still open, and past
Anything past its date and not closed stays on a list of its own. That list is short. It is meant to be read every Monday.
Who works out the date
You do, and that is deliberate
The software does not compute limitation. It stores the date an advocate has worked out, with the note explaining how, and brings it back before it arrives. Computing periods from the papers is legal judgement, and it belongs to the person answerable for it.
A reminder is not a safeguard
If the date was entered wrong, it will come up wrong. Firms that take this seriously have a second person check limitation entries on new briefs, and the software cannot replace that.

Does it calculate limitation periods for us?
No. It holds the date your advocate has worked out and brings it back in time. Working out the period from the facts stays with the person who signs the plaint.
Where do these reminders show up?
On the matter, on the responsible person’s pending list, and on a separate list of dates coming up. They do not sit inside the hearing calendar, because they are not hearings.
Can a partner see everything falling due next month?
Yes, across the firm, by advocate or by client, and a partner who reads it on the first has the whole month in front of him.
