The roster says who should be where. The punch, or the supervisor’s marking from site, says who was. Both sit on the same record, so the month closes on facts.
Written on the last day of the month
The muster gets filled in at the end, from memory and a torn notebook. Nobody can reconstruct the second week of June. The supervisor is sure about four days the machine has no record of, and the argument is settled by whoever is more insistent.
How the month is marked
Shifts planned ahead
Early, general, night. Rostered before the week starts, so people know and cover is arranged in advance rather than at six in the evening.
Punched at the gate
Office staff punch on the machine you already own. Most machines export a file, and many allow a direct connection.
Marked at site, with a location
A supervisor marks his gang from where the work is, and the entry carries the place it was marked from.
Corrections that leave a trail
Somebody forgot to punch. HR fixes it, and the correction keeps the name of whoever made it and the reason.

Frequently asked questions
Does it calculate salary from this?
No. It prepares the month and hands it over. Days present, overtime hours, approved leave and unpaid absence go to payroll, whether that runs in software you own or in your consultant’s office.
Will it work with our biometric machine?
Usually. Your model is checked at set-up, and if it is too old to be worth connecting we say so plainly rather than building a workaround nobody will maintain.
How is a night shift crossing midnight counted?
Against the shift, not the calendar date. A man who starts at ten and leaves at six has worked one night duty, and the hours past his shift are counted as overtime.
Can a supervisor mark attendance for people without phones?
Yes, and on most sites that is how it runs. He marks the gang from his own handset, the location goes on the entry, and his name stays against it.
