Bed 14 Is Free, and Somebody Is Already On It

Discharge cleaning, spills, toilets and the scheduled rounds sit in one queue with names against them. The supervisor sees who is free before she promises anybody a bed.

The bed that waits three hours

A discharge at seven leaves a bed to be turned around. Admissions downstairs has a patient for it. Between those two facts sits a ward boy nobody has actually told. Three hours later the bed is still stripped, and the family in the corridor has asked twice.

How a cleaning job runs

Raised from the ward

Bed, ward and urgency, entered at the ward station or from a phone in the corridor.

Given to somebody on duty

The supervisor puts a ward boy on it from the roster, so work does not go to a man who went home at two.

Started and closed with a time

Turnaround stops being an impression and becomes a figure you can read ward by ward.

The scheduled rounds as well

Toilet cleaning, corridors and the routine rounds sit in the same list as the one-off spills, so neither hides behind the other.

What the supervisor has on her screen

  • Today’s jobs by floor, and who is on each of them
  • Jobs past their response time, climbing to the duty manager
  • Bed turnaround time after a discharge, ward by ward
  • Rounds still due before the evening shift ends
  • Support staff rostered by shift and floor
FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Do ward boys need smartphones?

Those who carry one see their own jobs on it. Where they do not, the supervisor holds the screen, assigns from it and closes the job once she has checked the work. Plenty of hospitals run it exactly that way.

Can a housekeeping job become a maintenance one?

Yes. A spill that turns out to be a leaking pipe is reassigned to maintenance, and the history keeps both steps under the same job.

Will it make the ward cleaner?

No. It shows what was raised, who took it and when it closed, which is a record rather than a result. A floor short of two people on nights stays short of two people.

How does the night shift hand over?

Open jobs at shift change are on a screen instead of in a conversation. What was raised, what got done and what is still open passes to the next supervisor intact.
