Job Cards and Orders for Printing Presses

Every accepted order gets one job card holding the specification, paper, quantity, delivery date and the stages the job must pass through. The card is the single reference from the counter to dispatch.

What the job card holds

On paper, a job card is a slip that travels with the work and is often lost between the press and the binding table. Here it is a record that every department opens on screen.

Specification

Finished size, number of pages or leaves, paper and GSM for the cover and the inside, colours, finishing and any special instruction from the customer.

Quantity and delivery date

The ordered quantity and the date promised. A part delivery can be planned for a job that has a large run.

Stages

Artwork, plates, press, cutting, folding, lamination, binding and packing are listed for the job. Only the stages the job needs appear.

Linked records

The estimate it came from, the proof that was approved, paper issued, outside work sent and the challans and invoice raised.

Following a job through the press

Operators mark a stage done when they finish it. The counter then sees that the plates are made but the sheets are still at lamination. A customer who calls at four in the evening gets an answer from the screen. Nobody walks across the floor to look.

Changes after the card is opened

Customers change a quantity or a paper after the card is raised. The change is recorded with who made it and when. The press, stores and accounts all see the amended card. An old printout is not the only copy.

What the module leaves to others

The job card records and routes the work. It does not decide the order in which jobs run on a machine, which is handled in the press and finishing schedule. Prices on the card follow the estimate, and any rule for changing them is set by the owner.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Can a job card be printed for the shop floor?

Yes. A job card can be printed with its specification and stages for operators who prefer a sheet beside the machine. Marking stages done still happens on screen.

How are job numbers assigned?

In the series your press already uses, such as a running number with a year prefix. The format is set during implementation.

Can one order be split into several job cards?

Yes. A customer who orders a brochure and a visiting card together can have two cards under one order, each with its own stages.

Does a cancelled job disappear?

No. It is marked cancelled with a reason, and any paper already issued stays visible so stock can be corrected.
