Outside Job Work for Printing Presses
Lamination, die-cutting, foiling and binding are often done by other units. This module records what was sent, the date it is due back and what the unit will charge, against the job it belongs to.
Vendors and what they do
Each outside unit is entered once, with the work it does and the rate it usually charges. A press may use one unit for gloss lamination, another for die-cutting and a third for case binding. The counter picks the vendor from the list.
A job going out and coming back
Why the pending list matters
A brochure job can be printed on Monday and still be at the laminator on Friday. Without a record, that is discovered when the customer calls. Here the job shows as out of the press and with a named unit. The press manager can phone the vendor knowing what was sent.
What the client decides
- Which outside units are on the vendor list, and what each one does
- Whether vendor rates are fixed or entered for every job
- Who signs the vendor challan when goods leave
- How damaged or short returns are claimed from the vendor
- How vendor bills reach your accountant
Frequently asked questions
Can one job go to two outside units?
Yes. A job can be laminated at one unit and die-cut at another, and each trip is recorded with its own dates and charge.
Does it pay the vendor?
No. It records the vendor’s charge against the job. Payment is made through your own bank, and the entry for it is made in your accounts.
Will the customer see outside work on the invoice?
That is for the press to choose. Some invoices show one rate for the finished job, and others list lamination or binding as a separate line.
What if the vendor returns fewer sheets than were sent?
The shortfall is noted on the return, against the vendor and the job. The press then decides whether to claim it or reprint.
