Can you maintain software that another company built?
Yes — that is most of what this service is. We regularly adopt applications built by freelancers, agencies and in-house developers who have since moved on. In most cases we do not need the original developer’s cooperation, only access to the code, server and database. Where the code is unavailable, the live server usually holds a working copy we can start from.
Can you complete a project that was never finished?
Yes. We first audit what actually exists against what was promised, because the two are often different. You get a clear statement of which parts are usable as they are, which need rework, and which are missing entirely, along with a re-scoped plan to reach production. Occasionally a module is faster to rebuild than to repair, and we will show you that comparison rather than hide it.
Will you tell us if the software should be rebuilt instead of maintained?
Yes, and we would rather say it during the audit than a year into a retainer. If the architecture cannot support what your business now needs, or the code is so entangled that every change breaks something else, continued maintenance costs more over time than a planned rebuild. The audit sets out the options — maintain, rewrite the worst modules, or rebuild — with the trade-offs of each.
What access do you need, and what do you need from our side?
We need the source code or a copy from the live server, hosting and server logins, database access, domain control, app store accounts where a mobile app exists, and keys for third-party services such as payment, SMS or WhatsApp. From your team we need one person authorised to grant that access, a list of the problems that hurt most, and someone who can confirm from the business side that a fix actually works. If some accounts are missing or held by a previous vendor, recovering and reissuing them is part of the first stage of work.
What if our previous vendor will not hand over the code or hosting?
We start from whatever you can legally access, which is usually the running application itself — the server carries a deployable copy of the code and the live database. Alongside that we prepare an inventory of every account, key and asset that ought to be in your name, so your handover request is specific rather than general. If something genuinely cannot be recovered, we tell you exactly what has to be rebuilt before you commit to any cost.
How do you price a takeover?
In two stages, because a fair maintenance price cannot be set before anyone has seen the code. The audit is priced on the size and condition of the application — number of modules and screens, technology stack, how many integrations exist, and whether the code and environment are available or must be recovered. Work after the audit is priced against the backlog you approve, or as reserved monthly capacity for a retainer. Anyone quoting a maintenance figure for an unseen codebase is guessing.
How long does it take to stabilise an application?
It depends on factors the audit measures: how much code and access exists, the size of the application, how far behind the framework and libraries are, whether a staging environment can be created, how many third-party integrations must be re-tested, and whether the database or server has to be moved. Emergency fixes can begin as soon as we have access and a reproducible issue; a full stabilisation runs on the schedule agreed after the audit, when there is something real to base it on.
Can you handle urgent production issues, and do you provide an SLA?
Yes, under a support arrangement agreed in writing. We define severity levels, the channel for raising an issue and the working hours covered, and we commit only to response commitments we can actually staff — we would rather agree a narrower SLA and meet it than promise round-the-clock cover we cannot sustain. Without a retainer in place, urgent work is handled on a best-effort basis subject to availability.
Can you upgrade the framework or move us to a new server without breaking what works?
Both are done on a copy first, never directly on production. Upgrades are made in steps rather than one jump, and we regression test the journeys your business cannot lose — login, order placement, checkout, billing and the reports management relies on. For a server move or database migration, which is common when the current hosting is end-of-life or held by a previous vendor, we do a trial migration to staging, compare record counts and key reports against the existing system, then switch over in a low-traffic window with the old environment kept intact until you confirm the new one is behaving. Every release keeps a rollback path.
How do you protect our data and credentials?
We sign an NDA before the audit begins. Access is granted through accounts in your name that you can revoke at any time, rather than shared logins, and credentials handed to us during a takeover are rotated once the handover is complete. We work with limited or masked data wherever the task allows, keep production data on your infrastructure rather than copying it around, and document who has access to what as part of the handover pack.
Do we own the source code, hosting and app store accounts?
Yes, entirely. Code lives in a repository under your organisation, servers and domains are registered in your name, and mobile apps are published from your own developer accounts. Where we inherit assets held under someone else’s account, moving them into your name is part of the takeover. You can bring in another team at any point without needing our permission or our cooperation.
Will you train our team or work alongside our in-house developer?
Yes to both. For non-technical staff we provide short walkthroughs of the admin functions and the support process. For a developer joining or already on your side, we run a handover covering the architecture, the environment setup, the deployment process and the known weak points, and we are comfortable working as the second pair of hands while your own engineer takes over more of the application.
