Quarter Past Seven, Stop Four, Nine of Nine
The attendant knows who climbed in, and she knows it in her head. Marking it on the trip turns that into something the office can answer with at four o’clock.
How the morning runs
Trips are created from the route, so nothing is typed on the bus except the marks themselves.
The trip, stop by stop
Her screen follows the route in order. At each stop she sees the children due there and marks them as they climb in.
Not boarded, marked so
A child who does not come is marked, not left blank. That distinction is the whole value of the exercise.
Drop-off as well
At the school in the morning and at the stop in the evening, so the trip closes with both ends recorded.
Trips not started
The in-charge can see at half past seven that route seven has not opened. A bus that has broken down announces itself.
What the office can then say
Children boarded against children mapped, by route and by day. Trips planned against trips actually run. When a mother rings at four to ask whether her son got on this morning, somebody can look instead of guessing. The not-boarded alert goes out from the office to the parent’s number while the bus is still on its way.
It needs a signal, and it needs her to mark
This runs in a browser, so a stretch of road without coverage means those children are marked when the signal returns. And if nobody marks anything on the bus, there is nothing to send and nothing to report. That is why attendants are trained on a real morning run, at their own stops, before the office is trained at all.
Frequently asked questions
Can the attendant mark boarding without network?
Not today. It needs a signal, and most routes have one for most of the way. On a stretch without coverage the marks go in when it comes back, which we say before you buy because a demo in the office never shows it.
What if the attendant marks the wrong child?
It is corrected on the trip. The trip record is the thing everyone argues from afterwards, so a correction made that morning is worth more than a perfect memory.
Does the driver mark anything?
The driver and attendant login opens the day’s trip, its stops in order and the children due at each. Nothing else. That is deliberate.
