Attached Lorries and Broker Hire
Market vehicles hired for a load are recorded with the broker, the hire agreed and the money paid at each end. The hire sits beside the freight the load earned.
What a hire record holds
How a hired trip runs
Dispatch staff ring a broker when the owned fleet cannot take a load. The vehicle reaches the godown, the number is entered and the hire terms are saved before loading starts, so no one argues about them afterwards. Consignments go on to a trip sheet as they would for an owned lorry. The balance is released once the signed delivery copy comes back.
Accounts that build up
What your firm decides
- The share of hire released as advance at loading
- Whether a balance waits for signed delivery proof
- How detention is counted and what is allowed free
- Who may agree a hire above the usual route rate
- Whether brokers are paid commission or a built-in margin
What hire records do not do
They do not find a lorry for you. Calls to brokers and the bargaining stay with your dispatch staff. Nothing here settles a dispute over shortage or damage with a vehicle owner, and tax treatment of hire paid is for your accountant or advisor to decide.
Frequently asked questions
Can the same lorry owner give vehicles often?
Yes. A regular attached owner keeps one account across trips, with hire, advances and deductions listed in order.
How is a shortage deducted from hire?
The deduction is entered against that trip with a note, and the balance payable drops by the same amount.
Do we need a broker for every hired lorry?
No. A vehicle taken straight from its owner is recorded with no broker, and the account sits with the owner.
Can hire be paid partly in cash at loading?
Yes. Cash at loading, a bank transfer later and any held-back sum are entered against the one hire. The account shows each payment separately.
