The Notice That Arrived on a Saturday

It came to the client’s email. He forwarded it to a partner, who was travelling. On Wednesday somebody notices the reply date is next week.

Recorded the day it lands

What it is, and under what

The section, the assessment year or the period, and the authority it came from. Your own list of notice types, built from the ones you actually see.

Two dates, both mattering

The date it was received and the date the reply is due. The second one drives everything, and it sits on the calendar with the filings.

A name against it

The partner or manager handling it. A notice with no name on it is the one everybody assumes somebody else picked up.

The reply and its proof

What went in, the submission acknowledgement and any annexures. Later notices on the same matter attach to the same thread.

What the partner watches

  • Notices open right now, with the reply date closest first
  • Notices where the reply date has passed and nothing is recorded
  • Every notice for one client, oldest first, before a hearing
  • Which clients are getting notices repeatedly, and for what

The line between record and work

The reply is yours to draft

What the reply says, what is enclosed and how a position is argued is professional work, done by the chartered accountant handling it. The software keeps the dates, the papers and the trail.

Nothing arrives by itself

Notices are not pulled from any portal or mailbox. Somebody in your office records the notice when it reaches the firm, and the whole value of this rests on that being done the same day.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Does it read notices from the income tax or GST portal?

No. There is no portal connection and no credentials are stored. A notice is recorded by your staff when the client or the department sends it.

Can a notice be linked to the filing it relates to?

Yes. It is recorded against the client and the period, so the return as filed and its acknowledgement are one click away while the representation is being drafted.

Can we set our own reminder before a reply date?

Yes, at whatever lead time your firm works to. It shows on the handler’s pending list and on the partner’s view of open notices.

Is a hearing date kept here too?

It can be, as a date on the notice with a note of who is attending. It then sits beside the reply date instead of in a diary of its own.
