Sample Collection and Lab Results

Many imaging centres also run a collection counter or a small lab. Samples are labelled with a barcode when they are drawn. Results are entered against each test and wait for the pathologist’s approval before the report goes out.

From collection to result

The lab sees what is due and what has arrived.

Barcode labels

Each sample gets a label tied to the patient and test, printed at the counter or carried on a home visit.

Home collection

A phlebotomist sees the day’s visits on a phone and marks each sample collected.

Result entry

Results are typed against each test, with the reference range the lab sets shown beside them.

Approval

The pathologist reviews and approves. Only then does the lab report join the patient’s visit as final.

Analyser interfacing

Sending results straight from an analyser is scoped per machine model during implementation. Without it, the technician enters values by hand. Samples sent to an outside lab can be marked out and back, with the result attached on return.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Is this a full pathology lab system?

Not on its own. It covers sample collection, result entry and approval for the in-house lab of an imaging centre, not the full range a pathology lab works with. A busy pathology lab may need a dedicated system.

Can an imaging report and lab report go out together?

Yes. A package visit can wait until every part is signed, then send one set.
