Will our staff manage to build reports themselves?
One or two of them will, and that is usually enough. In most offices a single person becomes the one who makes reports for everybody, and we train her properly instead of pretending the whole team will learn it.
Can a report show figures the person should not see?
No. A report can only reach records the person is already allowed to open, so margins and salaries stay behind the same walls. Export rights can be restricted separately.
Do we need this if we have dashboards?
They do different work. A dashboard answers the same question every day. A builder answers the question nobody expected, which is the one that matters when a quarter has gone badly.
Is it not simpler to export everything to Excel?
For a small business, often it is, and we would say as much. Exports stop working when the file is too large to open, when the figures must agree with the books, or when four people are each keeping their own copy.
