Semester Registration, Electives and Credits

Course registration lists the offerings for each programme and section, applies elective limits and credit counts, and records approvals. Eligibility is checked as the student registers, before attendance and exams depend on it.

Checks at the point of registration

Registration decides which attendance registers, internal marks and exam forms a student appears in. A registration that breaks a credit or backlog limit is cheaper to correct now than when the result is prepared. The module applies the checks while the student is choosing courses.

What happens at registration

Course offerings

Students see only the courses run this semester for their programme and section, and not the whole scheme of study that the regulation lists. Nothing extra appears.

Electives

Choices are limited by the student’s regulation, the prerequisites and the seats left in each elective.

Backlogs carried

Arrear courses are registered next to the current semester, within the limit configured from the regulation.

Credit count

Total credits update as each course is added, and a registration that goes beyond the limit configured from the regulation is refused before it reaches the approver.

Approvals

The mentor or the head of department approves. The approval is stored against the registration.

Add and drop

Changes inside the permitted window pass through the same checks, and the request and the decision are kept.

Checks made early

Eligibility to progress

The module compares earned credits with what the regulation requires before the student enters the next semester.

Prerequisites

A course that needs an earlier course cannot be registered until that earlier course is cleared. The refusal names the missing course.

Elective capacity

Each elective has a seat count, so one popular choice does not take a whole section.

Fee status

Where the college requires fee clearance before registration, the check happens here and not at the exam hall.

What the department sees

  • Who has registered and who has not, to follow up
  • Elective counts before the timetable is built
  • Arrear load by section before the semester begins
  • Registration as the source for attendance registers, internal marks and exam forms
FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Can a student register while carrying backlogs?

It depends on your regulation. If a limited number of arrears may be carried, registration is accepted within that limit and refused beyond it. The limit is configured during implementation.

How are electives allocated when demand exceeds seats?

Each elective has a capacity. Allocation follows the order or priority rule the college uses, and students see the seats still open before they choose.

Can students add or drop a course after registering?

Yes, within the window your regulation allows. The change passes the same credit and prerequisite checks, and the approval stays on the record.

Does registration drive the attendance register?

Yes. Attendance registers, internal marks and exam forms all follow the courses a student registered for, so an error at registration carries forward into each of them.

Can fee clearance be required before registration?

Yes, if that is the college’s rule. The check runs at registration, and staff see the fee status before approving.
