Manufacturing · Software for ioT device manufacturers

Link every device ID, firmware version and calibration to the unit that left the factory.

IoT device manufacturers build connected sensors, trackers and gateways around a radio module, a lithium cell and a firmware image. The software holds the IMEI, MAC address, firmware version, calibration offsets, SIM details and fixture result against each unit, so support opens one record when readings drift. Batches, shipments and returns hang off those records.

At a glance

An IoT device is a small board in a plastic enclosure with a device identity, a firmware image and usually a cellular or LoRa radio. Once thousands are deployed, the hard question is which unit runs which build, and which carries a suspect radio lot. A mislabelled batch is painful to recall.

Management software for device makers keeps the identifier, the firmware and the fixture result together for every unit, from the first programming step to the last courier label. Every returned unit points straight at the station that flashed it.

How the work runs today

A hardware revision leaves engineering with its parts list, a firmware build and a test procedure, and purchasing buys the microcontroller, the radio module, the lithium cell and the enclosure. Boards arrive from a contract assembler or your own board assembly line, then units are flashed with firmware and given a device identifier. A test fixture then checks the radio, runs the sensor through its calibration points and writes the offsets back to the unit.

Units are provisioned with keys or certificates, activated on a SIM where needed and registered with the customer’s cloud account through a script run from the fixture PC. Some are burned in first. Later, firmware updates go out over the air and devices come back with a one-line note saying what went wrong, so support needs the version. Quick answers matter to the customer.

Where it breaks

What goes wrong for ioT device manufacturers without a proper system.

Firmware versions drift in the field

A batch shipped on one firmware build, a patch reached only some units, and no table shows which devices got it, so faults are chased in the wrong build. Debugging effort goes to waste.

Device identifiers are tracked in sheets

IMEI, MAC address and serial number sit in separate spreadsheets kept by the line, the support desk and the cloud team, each updated by hand on its own schedule. The three lists never agree.

Calibration values are not tied to a unit

A sensor is calibrated at the fixture and the offset is written into the device, yet no record exists that support can open when a customer reports drift. The offset is simply gone.

Radio modules and batteries run in lots

A module lot with a known fault is found after boards are built into three batches, and listing the devices that carry it takes a hunt through build sheets. A recall letter cannot wait for that.

Returns arrive without context

A device comes back with a note saying no connection, and its firmware, batch and fixture history are not at hand, so the bench engineer starts diagnosis from zero. Every return becomes a puzzle.

What the software does

What we would build for ioT device manufacturers.

Named the way your team already talks about the work. We start with whichever part the audit shows is costing you most.

Device register

Hold the serial number, device ID, IMEI or MAC address, hardware revision and customer for every unit built, and reject a duplicate identifier at entry.

Firmware release control

Record each firmware build with its release notes and file reference, the devices flashed with it and the over-the-air updates applied afterwards.

Build batches and component lots

Open a batch per production run and link it to the PCB panel, radio module, lithium cell and enclosure lots used, so a suspect lot lists its devices.

Programming and calibration records

Save the programming result and the sensor calibration offsets written to each unit at the fixture, so support can read them later without a debug cable.

Provisioning and activation

Track the keys or certificates issued, the SIM or network activation and the cloud registration status for each device, with failures listed for rework.

Test, burn-in and shipment

Log fixture and burn-in results, pack units against a customer order and print carton labels carrying the device identifier as a barcode.

Returns and field issues

Log a returned unit with its firmware, batch and fixture history, the failure found on the bench and the action taken, whether reflash, repair or scrap.

How it works

How the work runs from Bengaluru for your city.

  1. 1

    The audit, by call

A screen-share and a look at the sheets, accounting reports and WhatsApp groups your team uses. No travel needed.

  2. 2

    A written proposal

Scope, what we build first and the cost, agreed in writing before anything starts.

  3. 3

    Build in short rounds

Working screens shared every few weeks. Your team tests them from your own office.

  4. 4

Go-live, in person when it helps

For data migration and training we can come to your city. Travel is agreed in advance.

  5. 5

    Support online

Fixes, changes and hosting handled remotely by the same team that built it.

Common questions

Questions ioT device manufacturers ask before they call.

Does it manage the devices once they are online?

No. Live monitoring and over-the-air updates belong to your cloud platform, while this holds the factory record of what was built and with which firmware.

Can it store the firmware files?

Release notes and the file reference for each build are kept with the version, while source code and build tooling stay in your own repository. The record points to the file.

Can customers see their devices?

A customer can see the units shipped to them, with device IDs and shipment dates. Nothing more is shown until you agree it.

Can a small team that builds a few hundred units use it?

Yes. A start-up building a few hundred units can begin with the device register, firmware record and returns log, then add component lots and provisioning as volumes grow.

What happens after I share my requirements?

An engineer reads what you send and replies within one business day. We then look at the software, spreadsheets and WhatsApp groups your business runs on today and write down what works, what slows your team down and what is missing. A demo login, a screen-share or a few screenshots are enough. You get a short written summary ordered by priority, with no obligation to hire us afterwards.

How much will the software cost?

We don’t publish a price, because it depends on what the system has to do. That first review settles the scope, and the cost goes into a written proposal before any work starts.
